Gustav Meyrink's fundamental needs, values, and orientation towards life are symbolized by the four astrological elements. Each person has their own unique balance of these four basic energies: fire (warmth, inspiration, enthusiasm), earth (practicality, realism, material interests), air (social and intellectual qualities), and water (emotional needs and feelings).
Meyrink's "elemental make-up" is described below. Remember that most people are "unbalanced" or lopsided, and if Gustav is lacking or deficient in a certain element (or elements), it simply means that he needs to consciously develop that particular aspect in order to appreciate and/or work harder in that dimension of life.
Sometimes we overestimate the element that we are least endowed with, sensing it as a lack within ourselves, but more often we neglect or ignore it. The qualities described below will be reiterated and explained in more detail in the following pages.
Gustav Meyrink often overlooks, ignores, or seems oblivious to the emotional aspects of a situation, focusing instead on "what needs to be done" in a straightforward and somewhat impersonal way. Meyrink can seem unfeeling or even callous. He is actually more likely to simply be uncomfortable and uncertain as to how to respond when confronted with a great outpouring of emotion or with needs that are emotional and subtle rather than physical and tangible.
He also tends to distrust feelings, intuitive perceptions, or anything outside the realm of the concrete and rational. In other words, if Meyrink cannot see it or touch it, he is likely to discount it.
Unless Gustav Meyrink learns to appreciate and open up to his own and others' feelings and inner experience, he is likely to live a rather dry existence, missing out on much of the richness of deep personal relationships and emotional intimacy.
Gustav Meyrink should beware of allowing his responsibilities or work to dominate his life to the extent that he forgets to emotionally nourish himself and his loved ones.
Although fundamentally realistic, with a definite conservative bent, Gustav Meyrink comes across as rather liberal and open-minded, as you will read in the next chapter. His apparent tolerance for varying points of view is limited, however, to those that seem well-grounded and workable to him.
